Freestanding Mirrors

Most of ours can — with one exception. Nova is designed for freestanding use only (the wavy irregular profile needs the built-in kickstand angle to read correctly, and it ships without wall-mounting hardware). The rest of the range — Titan, Titan Alba, Svelte X, Svelte Alba, Svelte Aurelia, Zenith X, Zenith Alba, Zenith Aurelia — are all dual-use. They ship with a freestanding kickstand and wall-mounting hardware included, so you can lean them as a stand, or mount them securely to a wall, or switch between the two setups whenever you move rooms. This flexibility is part of why the Zenith and Svelte ranges do so well in rentals: tenants freestand while they're renting, then can choose to wall-mount if they buy their own place later. The kickstand detaches cleanly if you decide to go wall-mount permanently.

The kickstand mechanism on our freestanding mirrors is engineered for stability at normal use, but any freestanding full-length mirror carries risk if pushed hard or during strong seismic activity. Three safety recommendations. First, all our freestanding mirrors ship with anti-slip pads on the base — keep them fitted and replace them if they wear down. Second, for households with children under 10 or pets that might bump into mirrors, we recommend adding a safety tether strap from the back of the mirror to a wall anchor (a small hook into a stud is enough — the strap prevents forward toppling without affecting the freestanding appearance). Third, for high-earthquake-zone homes (Wellington, Christchurch, eastern Bay of Plenty), we recommend wall-mounting rather than freestanding for mirrors over 20kg — the stability maths changes at the higher weights. Safety tethers are a $5 hardware store item and worth installing regardless.

Nova is our lightest freestanding mirror at around 11kg (160 x 60cm, PS black wavy frame). Single-person carry is comfortable, and the integrated kickstand means no separate assembly. In the mainstream freestanding range (mirrors that can also be wall-mounted), Svelte X, Svelte Alba, and Svelte Aurelia are the lightest at 13kg each (160 x 60cm, 30mm aluminium frame). At 180 x 80cm, the Titan and Zenith ranges weigh 19kg — still single-person lift if you're careful, but two-person is smarter for the initial set-up. Everything in the freestanding-capable range stays under 20kg, which is the threshold where we'd recommend two-person handling. For context, compare to the wall-mount-only Grandeur at 42kg or Louis at 45kg: those need two people and proper mounting. Freestanding is explicitly the lighter-weight portion of our catalogue.

The kickstand is built into the mirror's back panel during manufacturing — there's no assembly required. When you unbox the mirror, fold the kickstand out from its recessed storage position, stand the mirror upright, and it's ready. The kickstand locks into a stable angle automatically, and the anti-slip pads on the base grip the floor. Total setup time: under 60 seconds. This is deliberately different from some competitor mirrors that ship with a separate plastic or metal stand that requires tool-based assembly — ours is engineered as a single unit for apartment-ready ease. If you want to wall-mount instead, the mounting hardware is a separate packet inside the box; the kickstand can be folded flat against the back and doesn't interfere with wall-hanging. This dual-use approach is the main engineering advantage of our freestanding range versus single-use stand-only mirrors.

Yes — that's the whole point. Our freestanding mirrors are designed for frequent repositioning. Lightest case: 11-13kg (Nova, Svelte range) can be carried by one person from room to room without effort. Mid case: 19kg (Titan, Zenith) can be moved by one person if you lift from the base and keep the mirror upright; two-person is easier for longer distances or through doorways. Practical tips for moving: (1) never drag a mirror, always lift; (2) through doorways under 80cm wide, tilt the mirror diagonally; (3) on stairs, two people with one at top and one at bottom is safest; (4) for long-distance moves (new house), wrap the mirror in a blanket and transport upright in the car boot, never laid flat. One advantage of freestanding over wall-mounted mirrors: the kickstand means the mirror is always ready to stand up immediately after a move, without waiting to mount on the new wall.

For most renters, yes — three reasons. First, no wall damage: freestanding means no drilling, no patching on move-out, no bond deduction risk for wall hooks. Second, no landlord approval needed: even renters with generous landlords often have to ask before drilling; freestanding skips the conversation entirely. Third, portability: when your lease ends and you move, the mirror comes with you intact rather than staying bolted to a wall you've just vacated. The trade-offs: freestanding mirrors take up slightly more floor space (the kickstand angle adds 10-15cm of depth), they can topple if bumped hard (use a safety tether for kids or earthquake zones), and the largest mirrors in our range (Grandeur 200cm, Louis 220cm, Lowen X 220cm) aren't freestanding because they're too heavy to balance safely on a kickstand. For everyday rental use with 160-180cm mirrors, freestanding is the easier path.
