Modern NZ homes lean hard on rectilinear geometry — flat bedheads, clean-line sofas, squared consoles, linear cornices, rectangular windows. When a mirror echoes that geometry, it sits quietly and lets the reflection do the work. The eye doesn't catch on the mirror's shape; instead, the mirror becomes an extension of the wall plane, multiplying the light and depth without introducing competing visual notes. This is why rectangle mirrors are the default choice for architect-designed builds, clean-line apartments, and serene bedrooms — the shape disappears on purpose. It's the anti-statement mirror, which is often exactly what a well-designed modern room needs: a piece that earns its place through function rather than flourish.

The verticality rule

For floor-leaning or wall-mount use, aim for the mirror height to be around two-thirds of the wall height, leaving 15-25cm of clear wall above the top edge. In a 2.4m-ceiling Kiwi home, that means 160-180cm mirrors sit best — the Zenith range (180x80cm) or Svelte range (160x60cm) hit this sweet spot. In 2.7m villas or new-builds with tall ceilings, 200-220cm mirrors (Aldren range, Lowen X) come into their own. Below two-thirds, the mirror looks dwarfed by the room. Above three-quarters, it starts to dominate and the space compresses. Width is easier: match the furniture below — an 80cm mirror above a 100cm console reads deliberate, not cramped.

Frame, frameless, or textured — choosing by room mood

The rectangle shape is consistent, but what changes the mood is the frame. Aluminium frames (Zenith, Aldren, Facet X) in black, white, or gold give you a sharp architectural line and suit clean-white modern rooms. Frameless mirrors (Gabriel, Monarch X) disappear entirely and let wall colour or artwork dominate — ideal for minimalist or colour-heavy rooms. Rectangle Mirrors — FAQs

Rectangles win when the room is already architectural — flat bedheads, straight-line cornices, squared-off consoles, rectangular bay windows. The mirror mirrors (pun intended) the existing geometry rather than introducing a contrasting shape. If your bedhead is a clean rectangle, pair it with a rectangular mirror above for a calm, layered look. Arches are for softening angular rooms. Rectangles are for reinforcing them. The other case where rectangles win is height efficiency — you get the full 180cm or 200cm of usable reflection, whereas an arched mirror of the same overall height has 15-20cm of curve at the top where you can't see your face. For a daily outfit-check mirror, rectangles give you more practical reflection per centimetre.

Straight-Edged is our label for PS (polystyrene) frames with a 45mm wide profile and a textured finish — Branewood has a realistic wood-grain pattern, Tresson has a gold braided weave, Solene X has a natural wood-colour finish, and Nocturne is matte black on a narrow 22mm profile. PS frames give you the look of real timber or ornate moulding without the maintenance: they will not warp, crack, or fade like solid wood. Aluminium-framed rectangles (Zenith range, Aldren range, Facet X) have thinner profiles (22-33mm) in black (X), white (Alba), or gold (Aurelia) finishes. Aluminium is lighter and more minimalist; PS is warmer and more textured. Pick by the room's palette — timber-forward rooms suit PS, clean white rooms suit aluminium.

Rule of thumb: the mirror height should be around two-thirds of the wall space above the furniture, leaving the top 15-25cm clear so the mirror does not feel cramped against the ceiling. Above a standard queen bedhead (about 120cm tall in a 2.4m-ceiling room), a 160-180cm rectangular mirror sits well — the Svelte Alba or any Zenith works. Above a console (85-90cm tall) in the same ceiling height, 100-150cm of mirror height is ideal. Aldren at 200cm or Lowen X at 220cm only work in tall-ceiling homes (2.7m+) or as floor-leaning pieces anchored against a wall. Width is simpler: match or slightly under-run the furniture below — an 80cm mirror over a 100cm console looks deliberate, not squeezed.

Lowen X is our largest rectangular mirror at 220 x 120cm. It weighs 45kg, has a 22mm slim black aluminium frame, 5mm double-silver glass, and MDF backing for stability at that size. Lowen X is designed as a full-wall statement piece in tall-ceiling homes, entryway hallways, or main living rooms with 2.7m+ ceilings. Below Lowen X, the Aldren range (X, Alba, Aurelia) comes in at 200 x 100cm with 5mm glass, around 28kg. These fit standard Kiwi ceilings (2.4m minimum). Monarch X frameless is 180 x 120cm — same width as Aldren but frameless for a more floating effect. For smaller rooms, Zenith range is 180 x 80cm (stand included), and Facet X is the most compact at 170 x 70cm.

Frameless mirrors (Gabriel, Monarch X, Cascade X) suit minimalist, architectural, or colour-heavy rooms where you don't want the frame to add visual weight. The mirror disappears into the wall and only the reflection registers, which keeps the eye on the wall colour, the artwork, or the furniture rather than on the mirror itself. Framed rectangles add contrast and structure — black aluminium against a white wall creates a graphic punch; PS timber frames add warmth to Scandi-style rooms; gold frames add a glamour accent. The practical trade-off: frameless mirrors need careful edge polishing (ours use 10mm MDF backing to prevent chipping) but their edges are more vulnerable in moves. Pick frameless for serene, architectural rooms and framed for rooms that need a defined anchor piece.

Our rectangles are all designed for vertical orientation — portrait mode — because full-length use (seeing yourself head to toe) is the most common case for mirrors over 155cm. Technically most of the range can be hung horizontally if the mounting hardware allows it, and the 180 x 120cm Monarch X or 200 x 100cm Aldren range look good mounted landscape over a long sideboard or above a bedhead in a master bedroom with wide horizontal walls. Horizontal mounting does change the visual effect — horizontal mirrors make a room feel wider but shorter, while vertical mirrors make it feel taller. For narrow hallways, stick vertical. For wide open-plan rooms with low ceilings, horizontal can open the space. We recommend checking with your installer before hanging any mirror over 20kg horizontally — the bracket load differs.
