Hanging light over a couch usually means an electrician, a ceiling rose and a patch job on the plasterboard. Orsay gets there with a plug. The slim gold pole climbs to 173cm, curves out over the cushions, and parks a gold dome right above your seat. Close to what a pendant does, minus the wiring and the invoice.

Gold that settles down at night
Chrome bounces light around and can look a bit sharp after dark. Brushed satin gold goes the other way. The finish warms whatever glow comes off the dome, so evening light reads soft rather than showroom bright. The reach, in real numbers
The arc extends about 46cm from the pole, centre to centre, enough to clear a sofa arm and float the 25cm wide dome over the seat. It takes about 71.5cm of floor width all up, outer edge of base to outer edge of shade, so measure that gap first. The shade is 11.5cm tall and drops its light onto a book or a coffee table. Down at floor level, a round gold iron base 25cm across tucks in behind or beside the furniture. Switching is a black foot switch on the cable. Tap it with a toe on the way past, no fishing around behind the couch.

Sits best
Behind the corner of a couch, arcing over a reading chair, or leaning light across the end of a bed. At 173cm it fits under a standard 2.4m Aussie ceiling with room to spare. Takes a single E27 globe, not included. A warm white filament globe suits the gold and keeps it feeling like evening, even at midday.
